Why do I need to secure my Wireless Network?

It is important to secure a private network to prevent any users access your home or business network without consent, anyone accessing your network through your wireless network has the ability to steal information from you or use your internet connection for illegal activities such as downloading illegal files or images. All connections to the internet have a unique IP address which identifies your connection to your home or business, any computer connected to the internet through your network will display as your IP making you look the guilty party.

Is Using someones WiFi illegal?

In short YES.... This is known as 'piggybacking' and if you are using someone elses wireless conection without consent you are stealing! There have been cases which have gone to court and fines have been given for such activities.

What forms of security are there?

There are numerous types of security which can be implemented, most common is the types of encryption most routers are configured to handle WEP or PSK, other features would include MAC address filtering (specifies which computers can access your router), change the default IP address of the router, IP filtering block unwanted IP addesses, and also hide the SSID (routers name) so the network would appear hidden. The methods used depends on your individual needs, it is recommended not to rely on only one method as you are more vulnerable to attack.
